T Levels - An Update

T Levels have been rolled out nationally since September 2020 with 163 providers in 2022-2023, steadily growing to 466 providers in 2024-2025.  T levels are equivalent to 3 A levels.

T Levels are made up of the ‘Technical Qualification’ (TQ) awarded by an exam board.

The Technical qualification is made up of 2 components:

  • Core which is graded A*E with the exact same points as A levels (60, 50, 40, etc.)
  • Occupational Specialism, which is graded Distinction, Merit, and Pass, worth 60, 40 and 20 performance points respectively.

The final grading of the overall T level will be Distinction*, Distinction, Merit, Pass which are awarded not by the exam board but by ESFA (Education Skills Funding Agency).

The core components for T Levels are already in 4Matrix but we are currently seeking clarity on the performance measures.

Initially, the plan from the DFE is to offer attainment measure for 2024 with separate scores for the Core and Occupational Specialism as one is grades A*-E and the other Distinction, Merit, Pass.

However, recently the DFE have stated this publication is on pause and is being reviewed.

At 4Matrix we will continue to keep abreast of any new developments for performance measures for T Levels including an anticipated Progress measure.
